331) Aherne’s Pub of Old Bawn Road, Tallaght, D24

A large hospice where pensioners seem a little too happy in their nappy. The majority of citizens are senior and taking what could be their last tipple. The lounge is nothing more than a large hall with a counter and a couple of taps. A strong odour of disinfectant hangs heavy in the room. The mood seemed similar to that of a funeral parlour. Perhaps someone had gone to God just moments before our arrival? The aesthetic has the air of an airport lounge or bus depot, some place as would reek of the natural melancholy that arises among people waiting for transport that never arrives, pining for an escape that never comes, and yet, it’s coming! Zimmer frames and wheelchairs sit parked by the emergency exit in case of sudden collapse. Some questionable youths volunteer to mingle intermittently. One chatty local commented on the mix of young and old: ‘you get the wrinkles and the dimples.’ Beamish bonds at €4.00 but would you bother? Commiserations Aherne’s. One of the worst.
