207) Brannigan’s of Cathedral Street, D1

Formerly: The Moore House, The Goalpost, then to its current title named after James ‘Lugs’ Brannigan the infamous Garda-cum-boxer. Just off O’Connell Street is the exterior of this pub which is featureless and one wouldn’t be blamed for walking past it. However, inside is packed with style and character making this pub a little gem hidden in plain sight. Once inside one will notice the two medieval style archways with a central pillar that lead into the main bar. The walls are decorated with authentic swords, a large coat of arms, an Apache Indian behind the bar, a curiously large stuffed head of a bison, and even an ancient rifle encased under lock and key - likely the very weapon that shot the beast. They serve traditional pub grub which seems popular with patrons. The female facilities are upstairs and so too is a much smaller, more intimate little bar (often reserved for parties and unavailable to the average Joe). One will find arched windows up here with wooden frames and simulated stained-glass lit by electric light. The walls are covered in photos of stills of old movies. It’s well worth a whiskey and the price of pint to tame it.
