18) Doyle's of College Street, D2

Formerly: The Oscar Wilde, and The College Inn. A charmless late-opening Trinity favourite, tourists also plentiful during the day. A quasi-nightclub after hours; navigating through crowds likely to result in drink spillage. All conversations tend to be shouted once the music kicks in. Pub quizzes occur in the basement. Queues to be expected. One was once privileged to have a widow bare a breast in one's face in the upper room, whilst another was once honoured to have swapped spits with the widow’s sister in the room below. One must not expect such things to be either common or deserved or entitled. In the autumn of 2008, the starry cast of Pinter's No Man's Land (then playing in the Gate) was glimpsed commandeering the counter, including David Walliams, Nick Dunning, David Bradley and the almighty Michael ‘I don’t care, I like it’ Gambon (himself seen earlier devouring a sandwich the size of his head – his large Gambon head).
