Was once a harmless spot to stop for a breather on a roasting summer's day when en-route to a better elsewhere (namely, the Gravediggers up the road behind Glasnevin cemetery). Mentioned in Ulysses under the name of Dunphy's, passed by the funeral cortege en-route to Paddy Dignam's sendoff up the road. Very high ceilings. Was noted at the time for its enticing cheapness. Andrew Stephens lost a hat here, which turned out to have slipped down behind the radiator. You had to be there. And we were.

Update as of 2019: it has since been subject to an elaborate gutting and revamping and is now known as 'Doyle's Corner'. It looks now to have become reprehensibly crafty-beery, foodie-friendly and Facebook-phony, with a trebly repellent bouncer now stationed on the door to further deter one from a potential revisit. No thanks. A disgruntled patron by the name of ‘Anthony’ took to Google to vent his dissatisfaction with his gastronomic experience and gave the pub an abysmal one-star review: ‘Absolute kip all round, staff rude and portions of food very small... atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired ... avoid.’ This prompted a superb response from the owner who had to defend his business from such a public attack. He wrote: ‘Hi Anthony. Thanks for the feedback. I have only 1% left on my battery so will use this opportun’
