219) The Luggage Room (now: The Big Romance) of Parnell Street, D1

Formerly ‘The Dubliner’ which was as rough as guts. Now operating as a new bar aimed at students and tourists serves a pleasurable but costly pint of Guinness. The staff are very friendly and pleased to greet you. Coll and Stephens were once nearly convinced to stay for another round of stout on account of having been provided with a complimentary bowl of mixed nuts, the norm on the continent, a once-off in Dublin. It didn’t last very long – it’s Now shut.

Update as of 2018: reopened as ‘The Big Romance’ which describes itself as a ‘Vinyl Bar.’ Emphasis entirely on music and food. Crafty beers and cocktails only. Absolutely NO traditional stout available. One thinks of deputy Paul Gogarty - with all due respect, in the most unparliamentary language: FUCK YOU, Big Romance, FUCK YOU!
