175) The Metro (now: Mema’s) of Parnell Street, D1

Owner of an early-house licence. An amusing sign can be found on the wall: ‘Beer helps fat boys dance!’ Outside a Beamish sign stands proudly affixed. This is a small but decent local that’s modest in character and on price. One local character, not as friendly as the others, took exception to Sam Coll's accent, which did not strike him as being sufficiently Dublin. Now permanently closed. R.I.P.

Update as of December 2019: The Metro is now ‘Mema’s.’ The old stained-glass ‘Metro’ sign still stands over the main entrance. Now very trendy. Unlikely to have renewed the early-house licence. No Beamish bonding but one can take a pint of ‘Secco Frizzante’ whatever the fuck that is? The neon lit sign behind the bar reads ‘Mema’s Chinatown.’ DJs DJ at weekends. Questionable pizza heated in an ostrich oven at the bar. A Prague-like John Lennon wall covered in graffiti. Dog friendly. Bizarre chairs. Large beer garden home to gnomes. Mysterious doors and tables made from old scooters. But hark, where are your board games, Mema?
