346) The Cock Tavern of Church Street, Howth, North County Dublin

One of the better pubs we found in Howth, though not alas a Beamish bonder. They have worked hard to cultivate a maritime atmosphere (a sign above the counter bawls that they offer CRAB – OYSTER – CLAM – CHOWDER – LOBSTER, a pescatarian's dream of hell's delights straight in from the sea), and much light is lent from an illuminating cupola, complete with a rather tacky plastic chandelier. A micro-brewery was recently installed on the premises, to cater for the crafty-beery faction. Live music would seem to be offered regularly, and long-haired bearded musicians are forever starting up a trad session by the fireplace. We sat at the back wherein lies a large false snug, the walls lined with many mirrors enabling one to indulge one's most narcissistic impulses, posturing in a glass darkly, illumined by moody candlelight throwing crazy shadows.
