187) Mayes of Frederick Street North, Rotunda, D1

Stands on a soft corner at Frederick Street North and Dorset Street Upper. The enormous iconic exterior sign of Mayes Time’ (previously ‘Guinness Time’) has a Leopold Bloomish character from the Guinness family standing with one foot on the head of a seal, the other on that of an ostrich as he holds up a large clock while a trusty toucan flies past balancing a pair of pints on its beak. One must presume the creator of such a sign was experiencing the effects of a much stronger narcotic. Despite the loud and proud Guinness affiliation they honourably serve a humble Beamish. Hallelujah!

We found it to be very much a traditional pub - some sections are carpeted, others tiled, and a pool table dominates a small section at the back. Some Irish national memorabilia deck the walls - they’re not shy to fly the flag. Speaking of colours, Mayes is also a proud Spurs pub and the upstairs bar is home to ‘Spurs fans only.’ An off-licence was added later with its entrance right on the soft corner. Stained-glass windows show the initials ‘T’ & ‘M’ for Tom Mayes, or when inside the reverse ‘M’ & ‘T’ for Mayes Time!

Update as of June 2022: It looks like Mayes will be Mayes no more. Some band of bastards want to turn it into yet another CENTRA. Philistines! Shameful to see such pubs dying a slow death. Watch this space - let’s hope it can be saved. Save them! As publess as Portugal we’ll be soon. Save the pubs of Dublin for the future men of Dublin on the fair streets of Eire, O.
