382) Meaghers of Eden Quay, North City, D1

Oh, it was in this very bar where me ma met me da, truthfully says the barman dutifully - on cue, upon prompting. Former lap-dance parlour. Nice throwback. Not to be confused with Meagher’s of Drumcondra. Dark, dingy, lush, plush. Right next to the scary Adam and Paul alley. Formerly a pub called ‘The Horse and Tram’, then ‘Mooney’s’ - many a Mooneys in these parts! ‘We kept what we could’ says the barman. We visited on their 13th week of (re)opening in 2022. Great little spot to escape to. Sense of retreat. False snug ‘n all. The ornate ceiling is a wonder, poppa! Intriguing images on the storied walls. Painting of a war scene stands out - depiction of an incident related to some newspaper cutting pertaining to the Custom House on fire and ablaze in 1922. Stained-glass windows are excellent. Emergency exit obtainable into the scary Adam and Paul alley.

And we must mention (‘as obligatory as a shitting seagull on O’Connell’s scalp’) €6 Guinness again, by the way - sign of the times and story of our dwindling lives. Are you an Earwicker or a rear-licker?!? There’s a downstairs bar too, and an extensive whiskey collection. Food is trending. Says a young lad at the bar to a young bar-lady behind it, ‘what was here before it was pub?’ Says she; ‘a strip club,’ to which he quips ‘did you work here then as well?’ She wasn’t very impressed and didn’t so much as crack a smile - only wiped the counter top with great vigor.
