Tucked away and innocuous on the corner of Mespil Road stands the Wellington, dark but amiable and only a little leap from the Grand Canal. A pub has stood on this site for almost 200 years. It was a favourite watering hole for writers and musicians especially Patrick Kavanagh and the Dubliners. A curiously large pillar towers by the bar and is decorated with notated sheet music. Toilets are tidy and lavishly tiled. A quiet little pint-shop to read one’s paper at daytime.

Update as of 2023: The Wellington is no more. It has been taken over by a new crowd who have renamed the pub ‘BAR EILE.’
