157) The Townsend Bar (formerly: Ned’s) of Townsend Street, D2

Established in 1861 this traditional pub was a long-time server of stouts Beamish and Guinness. Cheap as chips (although chips have gone very dear!), with many underage youngsters doing the odd shift behind the counter, presumably relatives. Since it operated as an early house from perhaps 7am or earlier, it was a favourite go-to for dockers and night watchmen, to say nothing of the occasional gang of debauched Trinity students reluctant to discontinue the previous evening's batter and keen to prolong the piss-up into the following morning and the ensuing wasted day. Sadly now permanently closed making way for yet another big budget hotel. R.I.P.
