278) The Tolka House of Glasnevin Road, D9

Established in 1756 as the Bulls Head and operating under its current name since 1901. A nice view is afforded in the back room of the eponymous river which lends the pub its name. Food is served, a fire crackles and all seems very respectable and family-friendly. Plush, lush, anodyne interior. Even though Beamish is on the market and a large beer garden offers direct views into the Botanic Gardens, the pub is too sterile and without charm having been heavily gastrified. Other recollections are otherwise hazy since we were so much in awe of the preceding (and gobsmacking) Addison Lodge which formed our chief topic of conversation – the Tolka House came a bland second, and has since faded in the memory.
