Sidle down a vaguely threatening and rundown street and enter via a shabby exterior. But the interior was nice enough, capacious and roomy, with many interesting period cartoons on the wall depicting Gladstone, Parnell, John Bull and numerous others. The barman was friendly though visibly surprised to be asked to pour a Beamish – the result was cheap and inoffensive. The major off-putting note was the presence of a burly Eastern European bouncer, eyeing up the crowd for signs of disruption – having security installed in the middle of a placid Sunday afternoon certainly does not augur well for whatever predicted scuffles and horrors are yet to ensue by nightfall.
